Landscape Photography

Most people are familiar with the term ‘Landscape Photography’, and while it can at first appear to be one of the easiest subjects for photographers to tackle, it can also be one of the most demanding to master.

As an Architectural Photographer, I have always been more drawn to photographing the urban landscape; I draw inspiration from beautiful scenery which also features the hand of man in the form of cityscapes or single buildings such as St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall (above).

This particular Panoramic Landscape Photography image was captured in the summer of 2009, and is comprised of 10 images stitched seamlessly together. Having watched the sunset over the Mount on the previous two evenings, I was really interested in capturing the range of colours from dusk to nightfall, something which would not really be possible with one exposure . Consequently each frame in this Landscape Photography image (starting from the left) was exposed for 3 minutes, which made for a 30 minute total exposure, allowing the subtle array of purples over the Mount to blend into the deep orange colours visible over distant Penzance on the far right.

On many occasions while engaging in Landscape Photography, as well as while working as a Commercial Photographer and Architectural Photographer, the use of a long exposure can provide some interesting results, drawing attention to the static subject, while often blurring distracting people or cars in the composition.
